Why upkeep matters
The single biggest cause of premature appliance failure is neglected maintenance. Filters left clogged, seals never wiped, lint never cleared: none of these kill an appliance overnight, but they shorten its life by years.
The list below covers the routines that make a difference. Nothing exotic.
Dishwashers
- Clean the sump filter monthly. Twist out the filter under the lower spray arm, rinse under the tap, refit.
- Run a cleaning cycle quarterly. A specialist dishwasher cleaner once every three months keeps the heating element and seals clear of soap scum.
- Check the spray arms. Lift them out occasionally and rinse. Small holes block with food residue and reduce wash quality.
- Wipe the door seal weekly. A damp cloth around the rubber stops mould build-up and keeps the seal supple.
Washing machines
- Run a cleaning cycle monthly. Empty wash with washing-machine cleaner (or a cup of white vinegar + a tablespoon of baking soda) on the hottest cycle.
- Leave the door ajar between washes. Lets the drum dry; prevents mould and odour.
- Wipe the door seal weekly on front loaders. Particularly the lower seal where water pools.
- Clean the detergent drawer monthly. Slide it out, wash under the tap.
- Empty pockets first. Coins, keys, and bobby pins are the leading cause of pump failures we see.
Clothes dryers
- Clean the lint filter every load. Not most loads. Every load.
- Empty the water tank every cycle on condenser / heat-pump dryers. A full tank stops the cycle short and stresses the system.
- Clean the secondary lint trap quarterly. Most heat-pump dryers have a second filter behind the lint trap that catches finer lint.
- Check the venting (vented dryers). Clear the duct and the external vent at least once a year.
Ovens and cooktops
- Wipe spills before they bake on. A wet cloth with the oven still warm beats half an hour of scrubbing later.
- Clean burner caps monthly (gas). Blocked ports cause weak flames and incomplete combustion.
- Don’t drag pans across induction or ceramic surfaces. The scratches don’t heal.
- Run the cleaning cycle yearly on pyrolytic ovens. Twice a year if you cook a lot.
Range hoods
- Wash grease filters monthly. Hot water + dish soap, or the top shelf of the dishwasher.
- Replace charcoal filters every 6 months (recirculating hoods). They don’t last forever, and exhausted filters do nothing.
When something feels different
Appliances don’t break suddenly very often. They usually drift first. A slightly louder fan, slightly longer drying times, a cooktop that takes longer to heat. If something feels different, get it diagnosed sooner. Small faults cost less to fix than the failures they cause.
